Vadso
The bays here are famous for their wintering flocks of King and Steller’s Eider. In summer, birds such as Red-necked Phalarope, Red-throated Pipit and Temminck’s Stint are wonderfully easy to see.
The pool on Vadso island is terrific for phalaropes and, often, displaying Ruffs. Little Stint has bred near its shore too
Looking from the Nobile hotel you can see the tower which marks the point from which Amundsen set off for the North Pole in an airship. That spot has previously been great for displaying Temminck’s and Little Stint - though I didn’t have them in 2010.
In the summer of 2010 this bay was the only place in Varanger fjord from which Steller’s Eider could be seen. A male would regularly appear on a rising tide amongst the seaweed you can see in the middle of the picture
