The following details were given to update my earlier book, Finding Birds in Northern France. Since then the sites described here have all been comprehensively updated in the new (2019) book Finding Birds in mid-France

La Brenne

July 97. The areas just north of site 4 can also be good for Whiskered Tern, Night Heron and Honey Buzzard (Alex Lees).

July 98. The Etang Nuret, between Mezieres and La Gabriere, offers good views from the road of nesting Whiskered Terns. There were Little Bittern and Purple Heron over the small lake to the south of the track at site 3 (Etang de l'Ardonniere, apparently). The correct name for site 4 is the etang de Ricot (Alan Clamp).

1999. Little Bittern very elusive at site 4, though I've had three sightings here in previous years. Herons have increased in this area in recent years. Since 1997 site 1 has again been full of water and excellent for Black-necked Grebes and Black and Whiskered Terns. Night Herons are now seen regularly, Cattle Egrets were seen just south of Gabriere in 1998 and Great White Egrets have been reported near Blizon. (Julian Lawson)

Summer 2012. Cattle Egret and Great White are now fairly. common across La Brenne. (Chris Parnell)

Lorraine National Park

July 93. Near the dam at site 3 were 2 'enclosures' around which were 24 free-flying White Storks plus a heronry with about 50 Grey Herons. Other species here included Common and Honey Buzzard, Red and Black Kite and Great Reed Warbler. I also added Red Kite, Tawny Pipit, Red-backed Shrike and Grey-headed Woodpecker to the species list at site 5. I also had more Collared Flycatchers plus birds such as Black Tern and Ortolan Bunting at the Etang de Porroy and can recommend the Etang de Laxiere (good views of Purple Heron) and the Maron Gorge in the Moselle valley near Nancy (good numbers of Red-backed Shrike and Grey-headed Woodpecker). (John Redshaw).

July 97. At site 1 Black-necked Grebes as well as 2 White Storks and both species of kites overhead. At site 2, Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Golden Oriole in the woods. I stayed near Dieuze and found Marsh Warbler, Red-backed Shrike, Red Kite, Hawfinch, Montagu's Harrier, Hobby, etc. (Alex Lees)

New site: Ecopole du Forez

September 2019 A great little wetland nature reserve about 40km west of Lyon at Saint-Laurent-la-Conche (42110 Chambeon). Squacco and Night Heron, Red-crested Pochard, Hobby, Kingfisher, Ringed Plover, Gr+Cmn Sandpiper, Little+Cattle+GW Egret. A place that needs visiting to support it. (Adam Salmon)

New site: -La Serre migration watchpoint  - 63450 Saint-Saturnin (just SW of Clermont Ferrand)

September 2019 Brilliant in the early hours for migrant Pied Flycatcher, Woodlark, Yellow Wagtail, Hawfinch, Tree Pipit, Skylark, Honey Buzzard, Red Kite, Short-toed Eagle, Bee-eater. (Adam Salmon)
