Carambolim Lake seems to have recovered from the period in 2007-08 when it was drained and had very few birds. Once again you can expect thousands of birds here including Lesser Whistling Duck, Cotton Pygmy-goose and both species of Jacana. The area is also worth visiting for the nearby wood which is a known stake-out for Jungle Owlet and Brown Hawk Owl.

All the sites in this section are treated, in detail and with precise maps and directions, in my book ‘Finding Birds in North Goa’

If you have any information which you feel would help to update the book, please email me at dave@easybirder.co.uk and I’ll add your observations to these pages

Carambolim Lake and Wood

Wednesday, 24 August 2011

This is one of the observation towers overlooking the lake (site 3 in my book)

The view from the tower.

The causeway along the southern edge of the lake. After being almost dry in 2008, the lake had way too much water in November 2009.

The shallow areas covered with water-lilies tend to have the most birds

Carambolim Wood is where most visiting birders get to see Brown Hawk Owl and Jungle Owlet.
