In recent years there has been plenty of water at many sites in Andalucia so these lakes have been less significant but, when most of Andalucia was dry, they provided almost the last refuge for White-headed Ducks. If ever this species becomes elusive again, this should be the best bet as a last resort. These two lakes are the best of 8 wetlands which together make up a reserve called the ‘Wetlands South of Cordoba’. Of the other sites, Amarga can also be good for White-headed Duck and the Embalse de Malpassillo (a reservoir) is perhaps the best of these areas for Purple Gallinule. Red-knobbed Coot has been introduced to this area too.
All the sites in this section are treated, in detail and with precise maps and directions, in my book ‘Finding Birds in Andalucia’
If you have any information which you feel would help to update the book, please email me at dave@easybirder.co.uk and I’ll add your observations to these pages
